Filippo Barbieri is the Chief Scientific Officer for SpeedLab Institute for Performance Sciences. With over 25 years of coaching and performance development experience, Filippo is an exercise scientist and neuroscientist dedicated to advancing human performance through the integration of physiology and brain-based training. His work focuses on how the body and brain interact under stress, fatigue, and competition, and how targeted training can optimize both physical output and cognitive function.
Filippo began his career as a mountain bike racer, rising to the professional level through relentless dedication and a commitment to maximizing performance through science-driven methods. He holds the distinction of being the only Floridian to compete in mountain bike World Cups, World Championships, and the Pan American Games. Throughout his racing career, he became deeply focused on the mechanisms behind elite performance, particularly how to achieve peak output through training, recovery, and physiological optimization without reliance on banned performance-enhancing substances.
This pursuit led him to expand beyond traditional coaching into advanced research and applied performance development across both exercise science and neuroscience. Filippo has spent decades studying aerobic and anaerobic performance, metabolic efficiency, fatigue resistance, and recovery strategies, while also developing a deep specialization in cognitive performance. His work explores how neural processing speed, reaction time, visual tracking, and decision-making directly influence outcomes, especially in high-speed and high-pressure environments.
Filippo has also completed training through the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) True Champion Certification, reinforcing his commitment to clean sport and ethical performance standards at the highest levels recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
As a coach and performance specialist, Filippo is known for developing highly individualized, data-driven training systems. His approach integrates physiological testing, performance analytics, and continuous athlete feedback to create adaptive programs that evolve with each individual. His ability to translate complex scientific data into practical, results-driven strategies has made him one of the most sought-after performance coaches, with athletes traveling from across the United States and internationally to train under his guidance.
In addition to leading athletic development, Filippo leads SpeedLab’s Neurological Testing and Training Department, where he conducts ongoing research and development in neuro performance. He actively designs, tests, and implements advanced cognitive training protocols using cutting-edge technology to enhance mental speed, reaction time, and decision-making under pressure. His work focuses on key areas including eye-hand coordination, peripheral awareness, visual processing, working memory, spatial awareness, pattern recognition, attention control, cognitive flexibility, and inhibitory control.
Through his combined expertise in exercise science and neuroscience, Filippo continues to push the boundaries of performance training, bridging the gap between body and brain to help athletes, drivers, and high-performing individuals reach their full potential.
